Janakpur is revered as the birthplace of Sita, heroine of the Ramayana, and the capital of King Janak. The Janaki Mandir, completed in 1910 in a Mughal-Rajput style, is the centrepiece of the Vivah Panchami festival, which re-enacts the marriage of Ram and Sita each winter.
Mithila art began as ritual wall painting by women, marking weddings and festivals with bold lines and natural pigments. Today it is a recognised art form; buying directly from cooperatives keeps income with the artists.
Janakpur is dotted with dozens of sacred ponds (sagars), used for ritual bathing and festivals such as Chhath, when devotees offer prayers to the setting and rising sun.
