The Tamang are one of Nepal's largest indigenous groups, with a Tibetan Buddhist heritage and a distinctive damphu drum music tradition. In Gatlang, extended families still share carved wooden houses around courtyards used for grain drying and festivals.
Briddim and Gatlang operate rotating homestays managed by village committees, so income is spread evenly across households. Meals are dal bhat, buckwheat bread, and local potatoes—cooked over open hearths with the family.
This corridor once carried salt, wool, and grain between Kathmandu and Tibet through Rasuwagadhi. Traders' rest houses and chortens still line the trail, and the border crossing has reopened for commerce.
